Today's song is "Be Careful" (2010) by Akiva Lane
Tumblr media
Review:
A lot of scatting in this one:-) Overall very pleasant combination of piano and simple drums too! Vibe wise it's the kind of song I feel like would play in some of the older pixar movies.
Extra thoughts:
I swear I know what this sub genre of jazz is called but I can't remember it for the life of me right now!

In A Crowded Room Review- A Stellar Performance From Tom Holland is Wasted by Sub-Directing From Akiva Goldsman
Tom Holland is a world-renowned actor famous for his dual role of Peter Parker/ Spider-man in the MCU. Besides that iconic role, he has ventured out into other roles to stretch his acting ability. Some of them are similar in a way to Spider-man, namely Uncharted, where he does a lot of action sequences, but others are more like Cherry. The AGBO was produced and directed by the Russo Brothers…

Thank you @sergeantpixie for tagging me! rules: list 5 of your favourite books on a poll, so your followers can vote which book they think captures your vibe the best
But I decided to cheat and have it be 6 so that I can include 3 series and 3 stand alones, because that just felt right to me
Goodreads Summaries of the latter four books bellow (since the first two are a tumblr staple and a classic so I don’t feel the need)
The Diviners:
Evie O’Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City—and she is pos-i-tute-ly ecstatic. It’s 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfeld girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult. Evie worries her uncle will discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. But when the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer. As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfold in the city that never sleeps. A young man named Memphis is caught between two worlds. A chorus girl named Theta is running from her past. A student named Jericho is hiding a shocking secret. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened…
Black Iris:
It only took one moment of weakness for Laney Keating’s world to fall apart. One stupid gesture for a hopeless crush. Then the rumors began. Slut, they called her. Queer. Psycho. Mentally ill, messed up, so messed up even her own mother decided she wasn't worth sticking around for.
If Laney could erase that whole year, she would. College is her chance to start with a clean slate.
She's not looking for new friends, but they find her: charming, handsome Armin, the only guy patient enough to work through her thorny defenses—and fiery, filterless Blythe, the bad girl and partner in crime who has thorns of her own.
But Laney knows nothing good ever lasts. When a ghost from her past resurfaces—the bully who broke her down completely—she decides it's time to live up to her own legend. And Armin and Blythe are going to help.
Which was the plan all along.
Because the rumors are true. Every single one. And Laney is going to show them just how true.
She's going to show them all.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone:
Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.
And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.
Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands", she speaks many languages - not all of them human - and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.
When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?
Blanca & Roja:
The del Cisne girls have never just been sisters; they're also rivals, Blanca as obedient and graceful as Roja is vicious and manipulative. They know that, because of a generations-old spell, their family is bound to a bevy of swans deep in the woods. They know that, one day, the swans will pull them into a dangerous game that will leave one of them a girl, and trap the other in the body of a swan.
But when two local boys become drawn into the game, the swans' spell intertwines with the strange and unpredictable magic lacing the woods, and all four of their fates depend on facing truths that could either save or destroy them. Blanca & Roja is the captivating story of sisters, friendship, love, hatred, and the price we pay to protect our hearts.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone | Book Review
by Laini Taylor
Genre
Young adult, fantasy fiction, romance, high fantasy
Until the world can be remade
Tumblr media
Synopsis
Goodreads Book Description
Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
Some and then more
My Thoughts
I liked it at the start, it was interesting. I love the characters and Karou's blue hair, but when Akiva arrived, I didn't know what to think about it. It felt like their romance was a bit rushed, so I didn't like that part, but I gradually understood and accepted their romance.
I was reading and listening to the audiobook, not to hate on Akiva, but I just listened to the audiobook in his chapters. I only read Karou's chapters because I like her and to be honest? Akiva was kind of boring.
I feel like readers who love a high fantasy romance would fall in love with this book. So if you're in the mood to read about art, attractive angels, teeth, family, and friends then you should probably add this to your TBR list.
The Plot
The plot was really interesting, but also predictable. I wasn't surprised about anything that happened in here because they were obvious and predictable, it still had a solid plotline though.
The Romance
As I've said before, I felt like the romance was a bit rushed at first, but it was okay. This wasn't my type of romance read, I tend to lean towards cute and queer romances and not serious ones that have a lot of making-out scenes. I didn't enjoy the romance that much but I got through it and I learned to appreciate their relationship.
Characters
Karou
I like Karou very much. She jas an interesting personality and is also a badass. She can kick butt and love with her whole heart. She's a solid main character and a keeper too. And did I mention I love her hair?
Akiva
Didn't really care that much for Akiva. I get it, he's handsome and everybody notices him when he walks in the room. I just didn't like Akiva that much, he definitely wasn't the reason I read this book and enjoyed it, and if I don't read the second book, he'll probably be the reason why.
Brimstone
I love Brimstone. He may come off as cold and emotionless, but I can assure you he can feel. He gives me hope and is honestly the best.
Issa
Like Brimstone, I love Issa. She's sweet, kind and also funny. I don't like snakes but Issa is an exception. I want to run to her and I want her to comfort me and hug all my problems away.
Zuzana
This girl keeps me sane. She's the one who motivated me to finish this book because I adore her. She's hilariously funny and you can count on her to give you a good laugh, and she also cares about her friends deeply, she's so understanding and si caring that it's hard to find anyone else like her. And she's adorable too! (Not because of her height but because of her personality)
Victory and vengeance
My Rating
⭐⭐⭐.6
I couldn't settle on just three, but it also wasn't a four so I settled with this number.

Asexual Characters in Fiction: a list of recommended reads
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire
Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children No Solicitations No Visitors No Quests Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world. But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter. No matter the cost.
Tash Hearts Tolstoy by Kathryn Ormsbee, K.E. Ormsbee
After a shout-out from one of the Internet’s superstar vloggers, Natasha “Tash” Zelenka finds herself and her obscure, amateur web series, Unhappy Families, thrust into the limelight: She’s gone viral. Her show is a modern adaptation of Anna Karenina—written by Tash’s literary love Count Lev Nikolayevich “Leo” Tolstoy. Tash is a fan of the forty thousand new subscribers, their gushing tweets, and flashy Tumblr GIFs. Not so much the pressure to deliver the best web series ever. And when Unhappy Families is nominated for a Golden Tuba award, Tash’s cyber-flirtation with Thom Causer, a fellow award nominee, suddenly has the potential to become something IRL—if she can figure out how to tell said crush that she’s romantic asexual. Tash wants to enjoy her newfound fame, but will she lose her friends in her rise to the top? What would Tolstoy do?
The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men. But as Monty embarks on his Grand Tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy. Still it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.

This rare talent allows her to create illusions that others can see, feel and touch, with personalities all their own. Her creations are her family, and together they make up the cast of the Festival’s Freak Show. But no matter how lifelike they may seem, her illusions are still just that—illusions, and not truly real. Or so she always believed…until one of them is murdered. Desperate to protect her family, Sorina must track down the culprit and determine how they killed a person who doesn’t actually exist. Her search for answers leads her to the self-proclaimed gossip-worker Luca, and their investigation sends them through a haze of political turmoil and forbidden romance, and into the most sinister corners of the Festival. But as the killer continues murdering Sorina’s illusions one by one, she must unravel the horrifying truth before all of her loved ones disappear.

this is gonna sound so weird but drop some book recs
please, i love giving book recs! here are a few of my favs in no particular order w/ their Goodreads summary
Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson
A stunning work that is both a novel and a poem, both an unconventional re-creation of an ancient Greek myth and a wholly original coming-of-age story set in the present.
Geryon, a young boy who is also a winged red monster, reveals the volcanic terrain of his fragile, tormented soul in an autobiography he begins at the age of five. As he grows older, Geryon escapes his abusive brother and affectionate but ineffectual mother, finding solace behind the lens of his camera and in the arms of a young man named Herakles, a cavalier drifter who leaves him at the peak of infatuation. When Herakles reappears years later, Geryon confronts again the pain of his desire and embarks on a journey that will unleash his creative imagination to its fullest extent. By turns whimsical and haunting, erudite and accessible, richly layered and deceptively simple, Autobiography of Red is a profoundly moving portrait of an artist coming to terms with the fantastic accident of who he is.
honestly my favorite book. i can’t recommend it enough. it inspired my username and my blog title both here and on my other tumblr accounts. i’m planning on getting a few tattoos based on it as well.
tw: sexual abuse, disassociation
Night Sky With Exit Wounds By Ocean Vuong
Collection of Vuong’s poetry
tw: internalized/externalized homophobia, poetic violence, the aftermaths of war/immigration
The River King by Alice Hoffman
People tend to stay in their place in the town of Haddan. The students at the prestigious prep school don't mix with locals. Even within the school, hierarchy rules as freshman and faculty members find out where they fit in and what is expected of them. But when a body is found in the river behind the school, a local policeman will walk into this enclosed world and upset it entirely. A story of surface appearances and the truths submerged below.
so so so so beautiful and heart wrenching. i read it in sixth grade and have kept my copy ever since and haven’t stopped thinking about it. similar to The Secret History and If We Were Villians.
tw: self-harm, suicidal ideation, brutal murder
The Secret History by Donna Tartt
Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal morality they slip gradually from obsession to corruption and betrayal, and at last - inexorably - into evil.
in my top five favorite book and one of my most reread. my copy is covered in notes and ramblings.
tw: murder, alcohol and drug abuse
If We Were Villians by M.L. Rio
Oliver Marks has just served ten years in jail - for a murder he may or may not have committed. On the day he's released, he's greeted by the man who put him in prison. Detective Colborne is retiring, but before he does, he wants to know what really happened a decade ago. As one of seven young actors studying Shakespeare at an elite arts college, Oliver and his friends play the same roles onstage and off: hero, villain, tyrant, temptress, ingenue, extra. But when the casting changes, and the secondary characters usurp the stars, the plays spill dangerously over into life, and one of them is found dead. The rest face their greatest acting challenge yet: convincing the police, and themselves, that they are blameless.
it took me a bit to fall into but it’s really good. similar to The Secret History
tw: murder
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
A wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine's father. After Mr Earnshaw's death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine's brother Hindley and wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelly
The story of a young scientist who creates a sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment.
Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
Through the story of Charles Ryder's entanglement with the Flytes, a great Catholic family, Evelyn Waugh charts the passing of the privileged world he knew in his own youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities. At once romantic, sensuous, comic, and somber, Brideshead Revisited transcends Waugh's early satiric explorations and reveals him to be an elegiac, lyrical novelist of the utmost feeling and lucidity.
tw: sad ending, alcoholism
Crush by Richard Siken
Collection of Siken’s poetry
tw: internalized/externalized homophobia, poetic violence
The Likeness by Tana French
Cassie Maddox has transferred out of the Dublin Murder Squad with no plans to go back—until an urgent telephone call summons her to a grisly crime scene. The victim looks exactly like Cassie and carries ID identifying herself as Alexandra Madison, an alias Cassie once used as an undercover cop. Cassie must discover not only who killed this girl, but, more important, who was this girl?
it is part of a sort of series but it isn’t necessary to read the other books, though they’re great. I also recommend Broken Harbour from that series. similar to The Secret History.
tw: murder, one brief scene of homophobia by a main character’s family
Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures by Merlin Sheldrake
When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave. In Entangled Life, the biologist Merlin Sheldrake shows us the world from a fungal point of view. Sheldrake's exploration takes us from yeast to psychedelics, to the fungi that range for miles underground and are the largest organisms on the planet, to those that link plants together in complex networks known as the "Wood Wide Web," to those that infiltrate and manipulate insect bodies with devastating precision.
tw: will make you stare at the mushrooms at the grocery store for an ungodly amount of time
